Isaiah said in his oft-quoted passage, “Be Ye clean, who bear the vessels of the Lord.” The term vessel is found in the scriptures to signify several things – sometimes a mighty ship, other times a jar containing wine, water, or oil for individual lamps. This hymn uses these varied definitions of the term vessel as analogies for how we can be vessels for Him:
We are to literally be vessels for God – a pure space where He can dwell so that we can be His hands and feet on earth.

VERSE 1 – WELL
I shall be as a vessel for Thee.
As a hollowed well, prepared to receive;
Cleansing first the inside of my cup,
So with sweet, living water thou canst fill up.
Thy good word springing forth through me.
VERSE 2 – SHIP
I shall be as a vessel for Thee.
As a mighty ship afloat on the sea;
With my sails held fast and opened wide,
For the wind of Thy spirit to fill and guide,
Leading where Thou wilt have me be.
VERSE 3 – LAMP
I shall be as a vessel for Thee.
As a lamp of oil, lit bright through good deeds;
Standing tall upon the mountainside,
As a city aglow in a dim-lit night,
Pointing upwards for all to see!
