Isaiah said in his oft-quoted passage, “Be Ye clean, who bear the vessels of the Lord.” The term vessel is found in the scriptures to signify several things – sometimes a mighty ship, other times a jar containing wine, water, or oil for individual lamps. This hymn uses these varied definitions of the term vessel as analogies for how we can be vessels for Him:

as wells containing His everlasting words
as ships prepared to spread His gospel and goodwill throughout the earth
as lights to an increasingly dark world

We are to literally be vessels for God – a pure space where He can dwell so that we can be His hands and feet on earth.

I shall be as a vessel for Thee.
As a hollowed well, prepared to receive;
Cleansing first the inside of my cup,
