Mary Magdalene Joanna Salome

Why Mary Magdalene?

As my daughter, Alaina, and I prepare to release our first edition eBook, Mary’s Easter Story, and its companion song in just 10 days, you might be wondering what led me, many years ago,  to compose a storytelling song about the role of Mary Magdalene, and other women, in the Easter Story.  The answer?  I simply love women and all that we stand for and all that we do.

In Jesus’ band of disciples, we find courageous, faithful women who became the unconventional witnesses and the chosen first messengers of the Risen Christ.  This also speaks volumes about our Savior, who, rather than allowing only men to walk, talk and travel with him,  welcomed women who desired to do the same. He elevated their status.

Alaina and I chose to focus on four women specifically mentioned by name in the Easter Story – Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Salome, and the “Other Mary.”  However, we also want to honor Susannah mentioned once during these events, Mary the Mother of Jesus who was at the cross, and many other unnamed women.

“Our dispensation is not without its heroines. Countless women from every continent and walk of life have made dramatic contributions to the cause of Christ.”  — M. Russell Ballard
