As I thought about the boys I had been a steward over, as a Primary Presidency member, and of my own son who was turning 11 that year and would soon receive the priesthood, I knew I wanted to include a line that would be an anthem for their future as Aaronic Priesthood holders. I wanted to have a line they could sing that would bring feelings of reverence, responsibility, and belonging, and be an opportunity for the spirit to witness to them of the importance of this preparatory priesthood.
I did SO much research on that priesthood, and there are some amazing responsibilities and blessings that come with its power, including the ministering of angels. But to a young boy, the most visible responsibility they see associated with this priesthood is the opportunity to pass the sacrament. It is a responsibility that all Aaronic Priesthood holders participate in, including the Bishop, who holds the keys of that ordinance.
So, one of the very first lines I wrote was the line, “To the Sons of Aaron, he’s given charge of his sacred sacrament, every duty called to honor and enlarge, serving as his instruments.” I hope all the boys who hear or sing that line are reminded of the sacred nature of Christ’s sacrament, and of their congregation’s need for their worthiness to bring that ordinance to them.
In addition, I have learned a beautiful truth about the connection between the ministering of angels and the sacrament that I am excited to share during our live event this Saturday.
