Jesus in Gethsemane and the Strengthening Angel

Yes, some beautiful songs about our Lord’s experience in the Garden of Gethsemane have been written.  Is there room in the world for yet another song about Jesus’ great act of love performed as part of the Atonement for all mankind?  I asked myself this question when I decided to compose a children’s song about the Savior’s experience in the Garden of Gethsemane. What could I say that hasn’t been said?

While reading scripture verses about the Lord’s suffering in the garden, Luke 22:43 spoke to me.

And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

Who was this angel?  I looked excitedly for further references to this heavenly being in other New Testament accounts, but surprisingly, found none.  Only in the book of Luke do we read about this stunning detail. I can only imagine the beauty, glory, and warmth this comforting angel brought to the Savior in his suffering.  While many have suggested the angel was male, we truly do not know the identity of this glorious being and thus, the angel could have been female. The story of the strengthening angel became a focal point of the song – serving as the dramatic bridge:

And as he drank the bitter cup, an angel came to bear him up
Sent from his father up above to aid him in his act of love!

Performing the atonement wasn’t easy for the Savior. He actually wanted to have that cup pass from him, if it were possible. But through his obedience his mission was completed and a way back to Heavenly Father was paved for us. We hope all who hear this song will be reminded of his endless love for us.   — Cris
