Why I Wrote a Song About Women

My life has been magically touched by women and girls of all ages. That’s why I wrote the song “And Then Came Women.”

As Mother’s Day approaches, I miss my biggest fan – my mom.  I have a great picture of Mom sitting in a folding chair, wearing one of her many hats, watching her 52-year-old daughter (that’s me!) singing at an outdoor concert.  As a kid, she made sure I grew up in the country, never made me wash dishes, and sewed incredible outfits for me to parade around in at school. When I had to make the heart-wrenching decision to end my first marriage, she helped me pack, got me in the car, made a list of what to do next, and drove me 200 miles to my hometown.

Speaking of that, I recall all of the wonderful women who, without any notice, came to my home and helped me pack my necessities to leave.  That was a rough day.  We were all crying, hugging, and saying our goodbyes.  Twelve years later I still think about that sad day and how those women made it happier. Other friends have come into life since then – friends who drove 2.5 hours to be at my 2nd wedding, friends I sing with, lady friends at church who reach out to me and appreciate and understand who I am.

Then there’s Grandma – the one who taught me manners and provided the parental back-up when needed.  She was fun and it was hard to beat her at Parcheesi.

I found out I had sisters when I was 22 years old.  Mom had been married a short time to a fellow who later remarried and voila!  I got the sisters I never had, and somehow, I don’t feel as alone.

And nothing compares to daughters!  I’ve got two of them and they light up my life like nobody can.  I remember praying as a young mom-to-be, asking God to bless me with two little girls.  When my daughters were born in 1979 and 1982, I couldn’t believe how lucky I was!  Then I got my boys (but that’s another exciting story).  There is something so wonderful about knowing I have daughters who are there for me.   I know I am supposed to be the one sharing the wisdom, with the shoulder to lean on, but I’ve cried on their shoulders, too.

Daughters-in-law are pretty cool too.  I learn things from them.  They have knowledge and wisdom that I know FOR SURE I didn’t have at their age.

And granddaughters are a force to be reckoned with – these girls have PLANS.  Big ones.  They are tough, devoted, and talented.  Oh, and beautiful.  They often come to my rescue with their smiles in my Nixplay.

My favorite line in the song is “In my hour of despair, I said a prayer…and then came women.” Thankfully, women have always been there, touching my life with their love. – Cris
